Deep tissue massages use firm pressure and slow strokes to reach deeper layers of muscle and fascia (the connective tissue surrounding muscles). This type of massage is used to break up scar tissue and physically break down muscle "knots" or bands of painful, rigid tissue that can disrupt circulation and cause pain, limited range of motion and inflammation. Because this type of massage focuses on deeper muscles there can be some discomfort during the massage.
This is the ideal massage for chronic aches and pain, especially in the neck, back, legs and shoulders.
What can you expect during a Deep Tissue Massage?
Deep tissue massage offers more pressure than a traditional massage, and it is often used to target areas that are located under superficial musculature, such as tendons, deep muscles, and fascia. This type of massage can be uncomfortable for some people, while others find it brings them relief from a variety of physical problems.
Can you change the amount of pressure throughout your massage?
With a deep tissue massage, it’s important to communicate with your masseuse. At iFloat Spa, each masseuse takes some time to talk with the client prior to treatment to get a full picture of any problem areas or injuries that they would like to see addressed during the massage. He or she will also discuss what type of pressure you prefer to make sure the treatment isn’t too painful. This communication will continue throughout the deep tissue massage, and you can feel comfortable at any time asking for less (or more) pressure. Often the massage will begin with lighter pressure to prepare the muscles and body for deeper work.
Why should you get a Deep Tissue Massage?
Not everyone is a good candidate for deep tissue massage therapy, but it can be helpful for many clients with different needs. Those dealing with an injury or people who suffer from chronic pain conditions or extremely tight muscles may benefit from this approach. Everyone’s needs and pain tolerances will be a little bit different.
We only use experienced deep tissue massage professionals to administer this type of treatment. Since this type of massage is often used for therapeutic reasons, it’s important that the masseuse understands how to do this work properl, so the client gets what they need without the risk of unnecessary pain or discomfort.
What can you expect after a Deep Tissue Massage?
Many people cite that their chronic aches and pains are lessened after just one deep tissue massage. Many receive regular treatments to maintain low pain levels.
Deep tissue massages target muscles beneath the surface musculature, so even tight muscles that can't be loosened with stretching or yoga will be loosened.
As your tension is relieved from deep within, you'll feel more relaxed after your Deep Tissue massage.
CHRONIC ACHES AND PAINS
Reflexology 1hr / £70
This ancient technique directly stimulates the nervous system through the application of gentle yet firm pressure to acupressure points – primarily in the feet – which correspond to glands, organs and muscles throughout the body, promoting healing in these areas.
What should you expect during your first massage therapy visit?
Your massage therapist will review your intake form prior to your treatment, so it is important that you fill it out completely and honestly. Include any allergies, what areas you would like worked on, if there are any conditions needing to be addressed, any health concerns and medications. You will then be led to your treatment room, you will be given a few minutes of privacy to get undressed and get under the sheet in preparation for your therapist to return for treatment.
Sould you be completely undressed?
It is completely normal to leave your underwear on during a massage session or to request a disposable pair of underwear for your comfort.
Will you be covered with a sheet or towel?
Yes, your therapist will ensure that your private areas are covered throughout the massage as well as the areas not being worked on for your comfort.
The genitals (women and men) and breasts (women) will not be uncovered. If the therapist is going to work on a woman's abdomen, a second towel or sheet will be used to cover the breasts so the main sheet or towel can be moved to expose the abdomen.
Can you talk during my session?
Absolutely! This is your time, the most important thing is to communicate with your therapist. Some people prefer to talk through their massage which is absolutely fine, however many clients prefer to reach a point of relaxation that requires a quieter environment. Either way is fine, but most importantly communicate with your therapist, this applies to communicating pressure preference, comfort level, or anything that makes you uncomfortable as well. This is your time carved out for you and you should feel comfortable to communicate anything regarding the therapeutic massage treatment to your therapist.
How many sessions will you need?
Massage Therapy is customized to your needs and can help alleviate anything from stress to sports induced aches. Many of our clients come as often as twice a week or as infrequent as once per month or every few months, dependent on their needs.
When should you not get a massage?
If you are sick with a cold/flu or are contagious, we request that you reschedule your appointment. This is both for your benefit as the sickness can sometimes intensify with a massage and also for the therapist’s protection. Open lesions, cancer, certain heart conditions, pregnancy, may also cause a change in technique or inability to perform the service. It’s best to discuss with your physician and massage therapist prior to your appointment.
